Ostara 20 March 2024 Spring Equinox - Shop

Ostara or Oestre, is the Spring Equinox - a perfect balance of equal day and night, and celebrated in March every year. It symbolises Birth and re-Birth. After the Spring Equinox the days get longer, and warmer (hopefully), and Mother Earth becomes more abundant and fruitful. At the other end of the year we have the Autumn Equinox (Mabon) celebrated in September, after which the nights get longer. The Christian tradition borrowed the name Oestre, and used it to celebrate Easter. Hares are sacred to the Goddess and lunar Goddesses such as Hecate and Freya, because they are nocturnal creatures and are a symbol of immortality, and fertility. The Hare is also known as the Easter Bunny who brings us eggs (hopefully chocolate ones!) - another symbol of re-birth and immortality. Colour correspondences for Ostara are Yellow, Green and Purple, which represent the tree's green buds/leaves and Spring flowers such as Primrose, Daffodils, Crocus, Hyacinth.
