The Bast (Bastet) Goddess was originally depicted with a Lion head and was a warrior and protector, defender of Ra and Pharaoh. For much of Ancient Egyptian history Bast was a Sun Goddess, but when the Greeks occupied Egypt, she became known as a Moon Goddess.  As her appearance changed to the now familiar Cat form, she became known as Bastet, mother and patron of cats and the temple at Per-Bast was where people took their cats to be buried and mummified.
