The Caduceus symbol of two snakes coiled around a rod with wings above, has many interpretations.  It seems that over the years it has been confused with the Rod of Asclepius which is a similar looking symbol (one snake and no wings) which is truly associated with Medicine. The Caduceus, or Rod of Hermes, seems to originate with the story of the sun god Apollo and Hermes, where Hermes swapped his magical lyre for a magical rod that could turn base metal into gold, and so it is more associated with alchemy, trade and commerce. However, the modern Caduceus has long been recognised as a symbol for Healing and Transformation.
